There has been a lot of noise about fixed odds betting terminals (FOBTs) in the UK recently. It’s not just a UK phenomenon. Nor is it just a FOBT phenomenon. Responsible gambling has risen so high up the political agenda that the more far-sighted gambling industry CEOs are starting to realise it is a mission critical issue.
Thus far, the most well-publicised solutions in the UK have been the Campaign for Fairer Gambling’s preferred option, which is to lower the stake on FOBTs to £2. The UK government’s solution is to introduced account-based play, which is surely a step in the right direction. Neither solution seems to really address the problem of gambling addiction, which is almost certainly a broader issue that can only be addressed by society as a whole. However, it is also notable that neither solution fully utilises the technology available.
