Brazil gambling legislation passes first hurdle with senate committee approval

The Brazilian government has taken a step closer to a liberal gambling market for the first time in nearly 70 years, after a senate committee approved legislation that would authorize various forms of gambling, including via the internet.

The Brazilian Senate Commission for Regional Development and Tourism approved Bill 186/2014, which aims to legalize and regulate gambling activities including casino and bingo, by a margin of 8 to 2 (with 1 abstention).
