Winner: bet365
Runner-up: Unibet

For a business that started in a Portakabin, bet365 is doing rather well these days. The operator’s phenomenal 2013-2014 financial results confirmed its pre-eminence as the UK’s number one sportsbook. In fact, you will be hard pressed to find a more successful sportsbook anywhere in the world.

The company revealed a 38 per cent rise in revenue in its latest annual results. Turnover shot up to £1.37bn with net profit up an astounding 49 per cent. What other company could possibly come close in this category?

bet365 is a pioneer. It has shown all other operators what is possible with a sportsbook. It has carved its own path and developed its own infrastructure, where others have relied on external suppliers. The company is never content to rest on its laurels. Its heavily promoted in-play offering has been wildly successful. The company further improved the product, with a new version going live in December 2013, and has continuously added new sports and more coverage of existing sports. It has embraced live streaming, with 30,000 events streamed annually. The net result is £26.47bn of bets placed last year.

Joint chief executives Denise and John Coates have created a behemoth that continues to grow year-on-year. While others complain about sports results going against them or regulations restricting them, bet365 finds solutions and keeps the bandwagon rolling.

bet365 has grown from that Portakabin to become the largest employer in its home town of Stoke-on-Trent in the midlands of England. Its committment to the local community is clear to see from its 1,600-employee headquarters and its sponsorship of local football club Stoke City. The club, like the city, lingered in the doldrums for many years. Now the club, like the operator, is established in the Premier League.

In 2014 nobody came close. It will take some effort to dislodge this award from its grip.
