Winner: PokerStars
Runner-up: 888

PokerStars continues to defy expectations in such a manner that it has become unrivalled as the most successful poker operator on the planet. No other operator comes close. There have been challengers over the years but PokerStars continues to rise and rise while the competition falls away.

In its most recent annual results, PokerStars’ parent company Rational Group saw revenue rise 13 per cent to $1.1bn, with EBITDA of $420m. For 2014, EBITDA is expected to rise as high as $640m when combined with its new owner Amaya.

Following the takeover by Amaya, there will be a great deal of attention paid to its new casino and sportsbook. However, it is PokerStars’ core product that will provide the platform for any success in these new ventures.

Its product continues to evolve, offering more games and tournaments than anybody else. Not only does it have the best product, the most customers and the highest revenues, it also has the very best customer service. Its customer support team interacts closely with customers to ensure complaints, queries and difficulties are dealt with as quickly as possible. This is a vital component to ensuring the very best player experience possible.

New territories, new products and new ownership might distract attention in 2015 but history suggests this is unlikely. The best operators are able to increase business size while also increasing profit and revenue. There is no doubt PokerStars is one of the best in the business. It has always applied for new licences where it can and it will continue to do so.

The US beckons. Despite competitors’ attempts to derail its progress, one can only see it returning to a market it once dominated.

With cross-sell from poker to casino showing early signs of success, the operator may even find itself competing for two awards in 2016.
