Winner: Camelot
Runner-up: Norsk Tipping

Camelot might just be the most progressive lottery operator in the world. While others are content to sit back and count the money, Camelot is always pushing forward with new products and new thinking.

Camelot UK Lotteries’ 2013-14 sales of £6.73bn represented the second-highest amount posted by the operator since its launch in 1994, surpassed only by sales in 2012-13, when special promotions around the London Olympics helped drive exceptional growth.

The company has undergone a year of massive change, with the retirement of chief executive Dianne Thompson prompting a restructuring into Camelot UK Lotteries and a B2B arm, Camelot Global Services. Again, Camelot is thinking two steps ahead of its counterparts in other parts of the world.

The restructuring will see a dedicated team concentrate on growing its flourishing UK business, but will also give it the freedom to pursue contracts and clients in territories around the world. It has already had some success in this regard, with work in New York, Pennsylvania and the Republic of Ireland. It will likely become a formidable competitor in the supplier market, despite the strength of incumbents.

In 2014, the Global Services division delivered the operating company’s new proprietary iLottery platform. The migration from the legacy platform was carried out seamlessly and with a level of professionalism we have grown to expect from the UK operator.

So many lotteries are either fragmented or scrambling to modernise, but Camelot has done both with composure. It has lost a long-serving and hugely successful CEO in Thompson. She has bequeathed her successors a hugely successful and dynamic lottery. The new CEOs, UK Lotteries’ Andy Duncan and Global Services’ Nigel Railton, inherit a powerhouse.  Expect them to drive it from strength to strength.
