Winner: Scientific Games
This was one of the most competitive categories, but Scientific Games pips its peers following an astonishingly successful year.
While deals in US states such as Washington, Minnesota and Colorado helped shore up its US base, it strengthened its international presence in countries like Slovakia, Taiwan and New Zealand, giving it real worldwide reach.
Most impressive, however, was its triumph in the beauty parade to operate Turkey’s national lottery, Milli Piyango. Scientific Games will provide the technology as part of a consortium including a number of local businesses, with a 10-year licence to operate a lottery with sales of more than $1bn a year.
SciGames has been a prime mover in the wave of industry consolidation that has engulfed this sector. Following up last year’s acquisition of WMS, it bolstered its casino presence with the purchase of Bally Technologies. This gives Scientific Games a huge range of additional products and services it can bring into the lottery sector and enhance customers’ offerings as legislation permits. Furthermore, the company has looked to head off integration related issues by putting in place a management team capable of leading it through the notoriously complex process.
Having secured one of the biggest lottery contracts of the year and completed a potentially game-changing acquisition, Scientific Games wins Gaming Intelligence’s first lottery supplier of the year award.
