The European Commission (EC) has asked the German government to declare what steps it intends to take to end its sports betting monopoly “without delay” and bring its gambling legislation into compliance with European Union law.

In a letter dated June 29th, the EC questions the compatibility of Germany’s State Treaty on Gambling with EU law, noting that the treaty appears to have failed in its objectives of increasing consumer protection, combating crime and preventing minors from gambling.
