New Gaming Legislation Opens Murcia to Sports Betting

Murcia has become the latest autonomous region of Spain to introduce legislation authorising sports betting in the region, following similar moves by Madrid, La Rioja and the Basque country.

Murcia's new draft gaming legislation will replace the existing 1995 gaming law and aims to modernise the administrative procedures related to gaming, whilst bolstering consumer protection through new rules limiting marketing activities and better support for problem gamblers.

The new law also specifically authorises sports betting in the region, either through physical establishments such as casinos, bingo halls or betting shops or via the internet.

It is expected that the Murcia government will begin to issue 10 year sports betting licences early next year, once further regulations have been developed.
