UK lawmakers vote against crackdown on betting shops

Lawmakers in the UK voted in the majority Wednesday to reject a motion that sought to give local councils greater control over the spread of bookmakers shops on Britain's High Streets.

The Labour-backed motion came in response to increasing concerns about the proliferation of betting shops, which many argue are concentrated in deprived areas, and would have handed powers to local councils to decide where new betting shops can be established.
