Winner: Playtech
Runner-up: Dragonfish (888)

Like poker, bingo has endured a difficult few years, with the market generally dominated by private operators using proprietary software. The stark reality of the situation became clear in October 2013 when Playtech reported its first ever year-on-year decline in bingo revenue. It was the first time this had happened since it acquired Virtue Fusion in 2010, but it would not last for long as Playtech remedied the situation in 2014.

The supplier’s response has been robust. Not only has Playtech improved its bingo product but it has brought it into new channels, recently launching an HTML5-optimised interface for mobile and tablet devices, which automatically redirects users to the best platform for the users’ device. This update comes hot on the heels of work done for Gala Interactive, with a bingo and slots tablet product launching in January 2014.

Playtech is the bingo supplier of choice for some of the UK’s biggest brands. Signing up Ladbrokes as a partner can be regarded as a coup, but its decision to renew agreements with long-term clients William Hill and Rank Group show that its clients trust the software and believe they can rely on it to grow their businesses.

Playtech’s biggest bingo-related coup was to tempt long-term Dragonfish customer Trinity Mirror to drop its former supplier. Virtue Fusion now powers its Daily Mirror and Daily Record bingo sites. With its stable of tier-one operators continuing to grow, Playtech pushed ahead of Dragonfish in the running for this award.

The financial performance reflects this. Following the first quarter of decline in October 2013, the supplier saw bingo rebound by Q3 2014. The vertical posted a 10 per cent rise in revenue. Playtech’s bingo stands out as a shining light in a crowded market.
