Atlantic City's Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has announced plans to host a new skill-based games event which it claims is the first of its kind to be approved by the state’s regulator, the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE).

The $10,000 Guaranteed Basketball Free Throw Tournament is being rolled out as part of the regulator’s New Jersey First programme to launch innovative new games and content, and takes place on Saturday March 21st in the casino's Signature Room.

The Borgata said that the "groundbreaking" new game, which sees players shoot free throws for real money, is the first of its kind anywhere in the US. It features a $20 buy-in (with one rebuy permitted) and consists of three rounds, each 90 seconds long.

Players then progress to a round of 16, competing against one another, until a winner is crowned, with the top four participants from the final round winning a collective pool prize of $10,000 prize. Players must be 21 or older.

“As Atlantic City’s market-leading resort destination, we believe that it is important that the Borgata continues to play a dynamic role in the implementation of original and revolutionary programs,” the Borgata's chief operating officer and president Tom Ballance said of the launch.

“We appreciate the progressive thinking of the Division as well as their encouragement as we begin to introduce social and skill-based gaming options to a new generation of players,” he added.

The launch comes after the DGE called for submissions from social and skill game developers in October last year as part of a drive to revamp content on casino floors, in a bid to help the state’s casino industry return to growth.

The New Jersey First programme allows gaming products and concepts that are submitted to New Jersey prior to any other jurisdiction or testing lab to be tested and if approved, launched on the casino floor within 14 days.
