A pair of former Kambi Group employees have launched Black Type, a new sportsbook brand specialising in horse racing, with the offering powered by London-based platform provider FSB Technology.

The new betting site features a hybrid trading solution, allowing certain sports markets to be controlled by Black Type's own traders, with others to be managed by FSB's in-house team.

It has been created by Dave Gowers and Craig Nicholson, who previously worked for Swedish sportsbook supplier Kambi, alongside Mylo Sangster, the grandson of thoroughbred horse owner and breeder Robert Sangster. The company has been named after group races, the highest level of competition in thoroughbred horse racing, which are sometimes referred to as 'black type' races.

During their time at Kambi, Gowers and Nicholson worked on the development of the software provider's betting solution for 888sport, overseeing the operator's racing products and its expansion into regulated markets from the supplier side.

Speaking about the new concept, Nicholson said: "Having witnessed the evolution of the industry over the past twenty years, the UK market in particular has lacked a quality horse racing-focused sportsbook for a considerable time, and there is very little competition for the established, bigger operators.

"We wanted to draw on our knowledge and racing heritage to put that right, but most importantly we wanted to offer a very competitively-priced service while also being seen to lay a fair bet. We're called Black Type for a reason.

"Of all the managed sportsbook solutions, it was also a no-brainer to go with FSB Technology as their platform was by far the most flexible and appealing to traders like us," he explained.

FSB Technology's business development director Richard Thorp said he was delighted that Black Type was now live.

"It is a feather in our cap that traders with a specialist knowledge of all the managed sportsbook options on the market chose FSB over some of our competitors.

"We're very confident that our offering is sufficiently flexible to combine the best CRM tools with specialist trading knowledge to deliver a compelling product that will excite customers and plug a gap in the market."

Black Type's latest odds will be featured on the online betting comparison service Oddschecker.

"We're delighted to be welcoming an ambitious new bookmaker to the site, particularly one with a fresh approach and a clear odds focused strategy," Oddschecker head of commercial Guy Harding commented.
