Despite posting a loss of $1.8m from its New Jersey real-money online gaming operation during the second quarter of 2014, US casino operator Boyd Gaming said that it continues to see online gaming as a long-term strategic opportunity to expand its customer base, diversify its business and create a new channel for marketing its land-based Borgata business.

Boyd said that it generated second quarter revenue of $6.7m from online gaming in New Jersey, which it operates via the Borgata in partnership with bwin.party digital entertainment. This was down 13 per cent versus the previous quarter.

Boyd Gaming president and CEO Keith Smith said that online revenue flattened out in recent months, which the company believes is due to seasonality of the business.
