Whilst foreign companies exiting the Italian market have made the headlines of late, it is clear that some overseas operators have made good progress in the choppy waters of the country's gaming sector.


With Italy's Big Three €“ SNAI, SISAL and Lottomatica €“ still dominating the betting sector, few overseas companies have been able to break the stranglehold, and indeed Ladbrokes and Merkur both sought to offload their retail betting businesses recently after clocking up substantial losses.

However Greece's Intralot does appear to have found a winning formula, albeit thanks to substantial investments made in the years since the 2006/7 Bersani tender process when the company acquired 580 licences for retail outlets, 416 betting shops and 164 "corners."
