Seattle-based online media distribution provider RealNetworks has appointed its founder Rob Glaser as permanent chief executive, as second quarter revenue from its gaming division fell by 29 per cent versus a year ago.

Glaser returns as chief executive having spent the past two years as interim chief executive following the departure of Thomas Nielsen in July 2012. At the time the company had seen revenue plummet, with the role being described as “not a good fit” for the former incumbent.

The lead independent director of the RealNetworks board Dominique Trempont commented that Glaser was the best person to complete the company’s turnaround and lead it into the future.
