A report commissioned by the government of Australia has found that social casino games or social media promotions rarely influence players’ gambling behaviour, although it warns policy makers to continue to monitor them to ensure that there are minimal potential negative consequences for players.

The survey, commissioned by Gambling Research Australia and carried out by a team at Southern Cross University, is described as the first comprehensive study of social casino and social media’s effect on gambling advertising.

Ultimately, it said, social casino games had no impact on the majority of players’ gambling habits, though admitted that for a minority of those considered at risk of developing gambling addiction or adolescents, these games could help foster irrational behaviour or exacerbate existing problems.
