New York-listed gaming supplier Scientific Games has announced the launch of its first slot to feature a skill-based component.

Based on the classic arcade video game of the same name, Space Invaders is a six-reel, 60-line slot game that also features the Space Invaders Bonus. The skill-based bonus allows players to control a laser canon to shoot down rows of descending aliens to collect credits, advance through levels and compete for one of the multi-level jackpot pools.

The new title also gives players the option to skip the base slot game and test their skills by buying straight into the Space Invaders Bonus.

"Space Invaders is one of the true classic video arcade games and a childhood favorite for many who grew up in the era of video games. We are thrilled to bring this iconic game to casino slot game play," said Derik Mooberry, group chief executive of gaming for Scientific Games.

"Our development team worked diligently to ensure that our first skill-based game featured authentic Space Invaders game play, complete with its familiar alien symbols and correlative music, and we are certain that players are going to be captivated with this compelling new game."

SG's Space Invaders is currently available in New Jersey and will soon be rolled out to other gaming jurisdictions throughout North America.

Shares in Scientific Games Corporation (Co. Data) (NASDAQ:SGMS) set a new 52-week high of $26.20 per share in New York Thursday before closing the day up 1.57 per cent at $25.80 per share.
