A New York poker operator convicted of running an illegal gambling business has had his conviction overturned by a federal court ruling that poker is a game of skill and not illegal gambling under the Illegal Gambling Businesses Act (IGBA).

The defendant, Lawrence Dicristina, was supported in his defence by the Poker Players Alliance (PPA).

In Tuesday’s 120-page opinion, Senior United States District Judge Jack B. Weinstein stated that poker is predominated by skill rather than chance, with the skilful action of players affecting game play.
