British online sports betting operator Betfair said Monday that it has filed a formal complaint with the European Commission in relation to recently adopted gambling legislation in Cyprus.

The company said the law adopted in July of this year could lead to betting exchanges being prevented from operating in the country, a possible outcome that it describes as a discriminatory and disproportionate  breach of EU law. According to Betfair, the prohibition may apply only to exchange providers, with all other sports betting products remaining unaffected.
