Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner with responsibility for sport, has given her personal backing to the joint betting industry and European athlete association programme which aims to educate players on the pitfalls of engaging in match-fixing.

Commenting at the end of a three-day conference in Berlin run by EU Athletes, the betting sector’s partner in the project, the Commissioner endorsed the initiative stating that “educational programmes and awareness raising campaigns can have a significant impact by reaching those most at risk of being approached to fix matches - the athletes themselves. I therefore very much look forward to the results of the project lead by EU Athletes and the European online betting industry.”
