A request by Betclic Everest Group to offer odds on competitive skiing, despite being rejected, has prompted French regulator L’Autorité de regulation des jeux en ligne (ARJEL) to take the opportunity to allow bookmakers to offer markets on a range of other winter sports ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The decision was taken after Betclic contacted ARJEL with a view to having the ski jump and Nordic combination skiing (combining cross-country and the jump) added to the official list of approved betting events. The authority ultimately rejected the proposal, noting that as the jump was judged by a panel, results were subjective and therefore ineligible for wagering.
