Sweden has asked the European Commission (EC) to give it more time to bring its gambling legislation into compliance with European law, seven years after the EC first threatened to refer the country to the European Court of Justice.

In an interview with Swedish media agency Direkt Friday, Erik Thedéen of the finance ministry said the Swedish government had requested the EC to postpone any legal action before the European Court of Justice so as to give Sweden more time to complete changes which it says are in progress.

Thedéen was speaking after a meeting with the EC's Internal Market Commission.
