The Belgian Gaming Commission (BGC) has filed a report with the country’s law enforcement authorities, alleging that social games developer Machine Zone is illegally offering players gambling-style games through its strategy title Game of War.

The case centres around a fifteen year-old Game of War player, who spent a total of €25,000 playing over an unspecified period. The BGC claims that while the title appears to be a strategic, skill-based game, it features a number of elements more commonly found in games of chance, which it said encourages players to spend more money in an attempt to speed up progress when playing.

BGC director Peter Naessens said that it was clear to the regulator that Machine Zone had used casino mechanics in the game, which he said were “essential” to the gameplay and encouraged users to spend money.
