Nick Xenophon, the outspoken independent Senator for South Australia, has said that he will introduce legislation later this year to address the issue of access to credit to gamblers by online sports betting operators following the release of a new report by Financial Counselling Australia, prompting protests from operator association the Australian Wagering Council.

The report is based on the experiences of financial counsellors and their clients in Australia, and claims that access to credit provided by online betting operators, as well as inadequate mechanisms for limiting losses, is fuelling a dangerous increase in online sports betting and problem gambling.
