Australian Senator and anti-gambling activist Nick Xenophon has condemned the country’s major professional sporting bodies after the organisations spoke out in favour of ending the prohibition on in-play online betting.

Xenophon claimed that the recommendation, made in a combined submission by the Australian Football League, National Rugby League, Australian Rugby Union, Tennis Australia, Football Federation Australia and Netball Australia, was designed to boost the country’s sports betting industry, with which the associations have signed “lucrative” contracts.

“This is a naked grab for cash by some of our biggest and richest sports,” the Senator said.
