Responding to calls from independent MP Andrew Wilkie and Senator Nick Xenophon for a national approach on advertising regulation, Australian media giant Seven West Media has said that any proposals to place further restrictions on sports betting ads on television would be “draconian and unnecessary”.
Seven West Media, which owns Australia’s largest commercial TV network Seven Network, said that it already had extensive restrictions in place to ensure community standards were met.
“We feel like we are in Groundhog Day,” said Tim Worner, CEO and managing director of Seven West Media. “Seven and the other networks are already heavily regulated and we are very serious about our compliance. In fact, we undertake self-regulation beyond the provisions under the Code."
