Stockholm-listed online gaming operator Unibet has been cleared by a Dutch court of failing to protect a problem gambler.

The plaintiff in the case had gambled €2.2m with Unibet over a one and a half year period and lost €185,000. His suit sought recovery of his loss plus compensation for the cost of medical and psychological treatment for his gambling addiction, and house moving costs which stemmed from the breakdown of his relationship during the period he gambled.

The case centred on two key questions; whether Unibet’s activity in the Netherlands was illegal; and whether it failed in its “duty of care” towards the gambler.
