Betting integrity body ESSA has announced 888sport, the sportsbook brand of London-listed operator 888 Holdings, as its first new member in 2017.

The operator joins the likes of Britain's Sporting Index, Russian operator Fonbet, Greece's Stoiximan and Spain's Sportium, who all joined the organisation in 2016, taking its membership up to 24 operators.

888sport has grown steadily in recent years, generating revenue of USD$25m in the first six months of 2016, and is an active sponsor of a number of sports including the Tingle Creek Chase horse race, Giro d'Italia cycling event and the World Grand Prix snooker tournament.

The brand is particularly active in football, where it sponsors Spain's Sevilla FC, as well as English Championship clubs Birmingham City, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Preston North End.

ESSA general secretary Khalid Ali welcomed 888sport as a new member and noted that each new operator helps to expand the reach of ESSA's betting integrity alerting and reporting system.

"It is the perfect start to 2017 and builds upon a very successful 2016 both in terms of membership growth and the association's ability to protect its regulated members from betting related fraud," Ali said.

"888sport will now add its unique customer base and betting market platforms to our global anti-fraud alert and reporting system."

Ross Harkins, 888 sports fraud and risk manager, added: "888sport is determined to continue to ensure the security of our markets and customer playing experience from the adverse impact of corruption in sport. Joining ESSA is a key part of that approach and to maintaining the high standards of responsible gambling that we are committed to."

Shares in 888 Holdings plc. (Co. Data) (LSE:888) were trading down 1.43 per cent at 223.50 pence per share in London early Friday.
