The US state of Virginia has taken a significant step towards regulating poker after the senate narrowly voted in favour of a bill classifying poker as a game of skill.

Senator Louise Lucas' Senate Bill 1400 initially appeared to have reached a stalemate on Friday after two senators abstained from voting while 19 voted in favour and 19 against. However a tie-breaking vote by senate president pro tempore Steve Newman ultimately ensured that the bill was allowed to pass.
