The latest twist in the saga of German gambling legislation has seen Schleswig-Holstein's new coalition state government commit to leading a breakaway group of states away from the State Treaty on Gambling and towards a liberalised market.

The state’s coalition government, comprising the Christian Democratic Union, Greens and Freie Demokratische Partei, will secede from the revised State Treaty in favour of a "viable European solution" based on the gambling law passed in Schleswig-Holstein in 2013 that allows online casino and poker, as well as sports betting.
