Australian Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm has raised the hopes of the country's online poker players after revealing that the government is examining the possibility of legalising online poker.

Leyonhjelm says he has received a letter from Communications Minister Mitch Fifield stating that his department would undertake “some preliminary work” examining the feasibility of licensing Australian online poker operators.

This follows the recent introduction of legislation to specifically prohibit online poker and casino games in Australia, a move which has prompted a number of leading offshore iGaming operators to withdraw from the market.
