Australian politician Nick Xenophon, arguably the country's most vocal opponent of gambling expansion, has rowed back from his long-held belief that poker machines should be banned.

Unveiling a gambling reform policy for his SA-BEST political party, Xenophon revealed that his aim now is to reduce the number of pokies in the state, rather than banning the machines outright.

SA-BEST is a party formed by Xenophon last year to contest seats in South Australia's state election, which is scheduled for March 17th.
