New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal has expressed his state’s objection to the recent Department of Justice (DOJ) opinion that federal criminal law could apply to state-sanctioned online gambling.

Grewal described the recent DOJ opinion as “wrong” and “deeply troubling” and has filed a Freedom of Information request seeking clarity on whether lobbyists spurred the decision to reinterpret the Wire Act.

In a letter to acting US Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, Grewal characterizes the DOJ’s new opinion as an unfounded “about face” with potentially devastating economic consequences for families and businesses in New Jersey.

“The Justice Department’s latest action is wrong on the law and wrong for New Jersey,” said AG Grewal.
