Illinois is poised to become the latest US state to legalise sports betting after lawmakers voted in favour of a major expansion of gambling to finance infrastructure projects.

The legislation, which is now before Governor Jay Pritzker for signature, will allow the state’s licensed gaming facilities to offer online and in-person sports betting to players over the age of 21 who are physically located in the state.
