US gaming and lottery supplier Scientific Games will launch a new multi-state lottery game next month, which will see at least 23 US state lotteries participating, with a companion prime time TV game show to debut early next year.
MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB will go on sale on Sunday October 19th with 23 participating state lotteries. A further nine lotteries may also launch the game subject to regulatory approval.
Developed under licence from Hasbro, the new game is the first multi-state lottery to be released in more than twelve years.
“MONOPOLY is one of the most successful brands in gaming with lottery, slots and sweepstakes,” said Steve Saferin, president of Properties Group and chief creative officer for Scientific Games. “With MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB, more millionaires will be made than ever before.
“Our player research consistently indicates that participants would prefer to see the millions of dollars in lottery prizing distributed to lots of winners, rather than one or two players winning hundreds of millions of dollars each."
The $5 game will be accompanied by a weekly one hour prime time television show from February 2015. The game show will feature players selected from an audience comprised mainly of ticket holders selected from among those who registered their lottery tickets online or via a smartphone app. The show will be hosted by actor and comedian Billy Gardell.
The game has a prize pool beginning with a $15m top prize and ten $1m club prizes. If the top prize is not won in a given week, it will continue to increase in value for the next three weeks until it reaches $25m. For as long as no one wins the top prize, all additional prize money will be allocated to fund additional $1m club prizes until someone wins the top prize.
Lottery players can register their tickets online to build MONOPOLY-themed Property Sets that, when completed, earn an entry into a drawing for the chance to appear on the nationally televised game show. Players can also win a five-day, four-night trip for two to Las Vegas to be in the studio audience of a "MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB" taping.
Contestants on the show will then be selected at random from the audience to play a series of games, each with a MONOPOLY theme, which will offer cash and other prizes valued at up to $100,000. A final round will offer one player on each episode a shot at $1 million. More than $2.5m in prize money will be available to win on every episode.
“Lotteries across the country came together and listened to what players wanted,” said Rebecca Paul Hargrove, president of the Tennessee Lottery. “With three chances to win $1m, a $5 popular price point, and the ability to unlock more and more millionaires, MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB is expected to spread the wealth across the country like no other game in lottery history.”
Since 2006, there have been more than 170 MONOPOLY-themed lottery games launched globally with a retail value of nearly $5bn, according to Scientific Games subsidiary MDI Entertainment, which has introduced 14 MONOPOLY Millionaire lottery games of its own.
Participating states launching on October 19th are Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York , North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington DC.
Other states which are expected to launch, subject to regulatory approval, include California, Idaho, Kansas, North Dakota, Ohio, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
