Scientific Games is giving players the opportunity to win prizes of up to $1bn through a new instant win game that is currently being rolled out across a number of US states.

The Willy Wonka Golden Ticket game is initially launching in 11 states, offering significant cash prizes to winners and allowing losing players to enter a prize draw to win a trip to Las Vegas. There they can participate in the Willy Wonka Billion Dollar Challenge for the chance to win prizes from USD$1,000 to $1bn.

The second-chance game sees players enter losing tickets into an online draw for the Las Vegas trip, which includes air fare, accommodation, transport and spending money, as well as the opportunity to enter the Billion Dollar Challenge. The event is set to take place in May 2018.

"We are thrilled that one lucky player is going to get a shot at winning up to a $1 billion in the Billion Dollar Challenge," Scientific Games group chief executive for lottery Jim Kennedy said. "We have been exploring the billion dollar prize concept for some time, and we believe the wonderful world of Willy Wonka ties in perfectly to this large prize opportunity."

"The Willy Wonka Golden Ticket game has two great elements – a Golden Ticket and the Billion Dollar Challenge," he said. "Like the iconic film, the game emphasizes life-changing opportunities.

"The game has been extremely well received by both state lotteries and players here in North America."

The Texas Lottery was the first to release the game in March this year, followed by the Georgia and Kentucky Lotteries in April, and Colorado and Maine in May. In total 11 lotteries plan to launch the game this year, with other lotteries currently considering adding the game to their portfolio.

Those that launch the product will be supported by Scientific Games' full media package, which includes TV and radio ads, retail point-of-sale materials and websites. The games can be retailed at prices ranging from $5 to $20, with the majority of participating lotteries planning to launch the game at $10.
