California Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Alva Vernon Johnson as the new director of the California State Lottery.

Johnson replaces Hugo Lopez, who stepped down Friday amidst allegations of misconduct among senior lottery executives at sales conferences.

Johnson previously served as director of intergovernmental affairs for the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians between February 2016 and November 2018.

Prior to that he served as executive director of governmental affairs and public relations for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, and director of governmental affairs at lawfirm Fredericks, Peebles and Morgan.

Johnson takes over from Lopez, who had served as lottery director since 2015 and was under scrutiny from the State Controller’s Officer, which uncovered more than $304,000 in prohibited and questionable spending by lottery officials during a recent audit.
