The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has banned an advert by online gaming operator 888 featuring a Marvel Comics character which was held to have particular appeal to children and young adults, in a decision that could have wider implications for the promotion of casino games featuring other popular film or comic book characters.

The promotion featured on 888.com and portrayed the operator’s Amazing Spider-Man slot in the style of a comic book. It featured images of Spiderman and text stating: “The Amazing Spider-Man”.

This prompted a single complaint, with the complainant challenging whether the ad was irresponsible because it was likely to be of particular appeal to children.
