The UK’s advertising watchdog the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a print advert for Sporting Index featuring a digitally altered image of Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer statue after it was deemed offensive and seen to link gambling with sexual success.

The ad, which was published in the City AM and Racing Post papers, featured an image of the Christ the Redeemer statue that had been manipulated to show Jesus with his right arm around a bikini-clad woman, and a bottle of champagne in its left hand. The statue’s right hand was resting just above the woman’s bottom, and its face had been altered to smile rather than its usual solemn expression.
