New Jersey’s Monmouth Park Racetrack has launched a real-money fantasy sports offering in partnership with New York-based Star Fantasy Leagues.
Score at the Shore is currently accepting sign-ups for daily, weekly and season long fantasy games in American football, basketball, hockey or baseball, with players able to compete for cash and prizes by depositing real money, or by playing in free contests.
It claims to be the first New Jersey-based fantasy sports operation with real money action, although it remains unavailable to residents in 25 US states which do not allow fantasy sports competition for cash, including New York, Illinois, Texas and Washington among others.
The website is powered by Star Fantasy Leagues, and includes game statistics supplied by sports data provider STATS.
“This has been many months in the making,” said Bill Knauf, vice president of business operations for the racetrack. “We are pleased to partner with Star Fantasy Leagues as we continue our goal of an increased gaming and entertainment presence in New Jersey.
“We invite all Garden State residents and those players in other legal states to join with us in this exciting new venture.”
Monmouth Park had hoped to be the first New Jersey venue to launch sports betting in 2014 until a permanent injunction was issued by US District Judge Michael Shipp, following complaints from major US professional sports leagues - the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB - as well as the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The racetrack subsequently decided to enter the fantasy sports sector as an interim measure.
