PokerStars Eyes New Online Poker World Record

Online poker room PokerStars has announced that it will once again be aiming to break its own Guinness World Record for the largest ever online poker tournament, with a new attempt set to take place this Sunday, December 27th. PokerStars needs more than 65,000 players to take part in order to break the record for the third time in twelve months.

The Guinness World Record attempt tournament will have a buy-in of only $1, taking place at 14:45 Eastern Time on Sunday with a $300,000 guaranteed prize pool.

This attempt follows the company's most recent success in July of this year when PokerStars broke its own record for the largest ever online poker tournament, with 65,000 players from 155 countries taking part in the tournament.

In the process the company also took the headlines and the plaudits away from rival U.S-facing poker site, Full Tilt, who had also attempted to beat the record on the same day.

Prior to that, the world record for the largest online poker tournament was set by PokerStars last December when 35,000 players took part in a special $11 buy-in event.

"Players really enjoy these events, and so do we," said PokerStars' Tournaments Team Leader Bryan Slick. "There is a real thrill when the tournament begins and everyone realizes just how many people are taking part from all over the world."

PokerStars also broke another of its world records in September for 'most players at an internet poker room in an online tournament', when 307,016 players at 42,814 tables took part in an online tournament simultaneously, beating the previous record by over 100,000 players.

According to figures from the online poker tracking site PokerScout, PokerStars is currently the top ranked poker network in the world, ahead of Full Tilt Poker, with daily average users rising from approximately 20,000 to 28,400 during the past six months.
