Record betting on Super Bowl demonstrates need for new law

American Gaming Association chief executive Geoff Freeman has called for a modern and rational approach to sports betting after record spending at Nevada sportsbooks during the Super Bowl.

Nevada sportsbooks took a record $132.5m in bets on last weekend's Super Bowl, prompting Freeman to describe sports betting as "America's national pastime".

It is estimated that the total value of bets on the Super Bowl, including illegal betting, could be as high as $4.2bn.
