The NCAA has postponed a rule change that will allow student athletes and athletic department staff to bet on professional sports.
The NCAA now plans to implement the rule change on November 22, after the close of a 30-day rescission period under NCAA Division I legislative rules.
The Division I legislative process allows a rule change to be rescinded within 30 days of becoming final if two thirds of the division’s members officially oppose it.
“Because that rescission window extends to Nov. 21, the board determined an effective date after that window was appropriate,” said the NCAA in a statement Wednesday.
The rule change was due to come into force on November 1.
The administrative committee of Division I approved the rule change to allow betting on professional sports on October 8.
The rule change was approved by Division II and Division III’s management councils last Wednesday, one day before the New York gambling indictments involving current and former professional athletes.
Betting on college sports will continue to be prohibited under NCAA rules.
