The private sector has been thrown into complete disarray in Germany with its leading players unable to agree what tax rate to pay.

The seven operators (bet-at-home, Betfair, Bet365, bwin.Party, mybet, NordwestLotto, Tipico) which have been granted a Schleswig-Holstein licence have a choice to make. Do they pay the 20 per cent tax on gross profit, which is stipulated under the terms of their Schleswig-Holstein licence, or do they pay the 5 per cent tax on turnover, which has recently been made federal law?
