A former National Hockey League (NHL) player has avoided seven years in prison despite admitting his involvement in an illegal gambling business that allowed players to bet on sports via multiple offshore iGaming sites.

Nathan Paetsch, who played five seasons with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres but currently plays for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League, pleaded guilty to the transmission of wagering information and structuring transactions to evade reporting requirements as part of a plea agreement.
