Germany’s sixteen federal states have approved the third German State Treaty on Gambling (SToG), with a new licensing procedure for sports betting operators set to begin in early 2020.

As previously reported, the third iteration of the state treaty extends the sports betting “experiment”, which saw the state betting monopoly suspended and the market opened to private competition.

At yesterday’s Prime Minister’s Conference (Ministerpräsidentenkonferenz or MPK), the sixteen German federal states agreed to extend the “experiment” to 30 June 2021, as well as make an unlimited number of licenses available to sports betting operators. Live betting continues to be prohibited however, as does online casino and poker.
