Germany’s Deutsche Sportlotterie (DSL), a lottery designed to raise funds for Olympic and Paralympic athletes, has been awarded an operating licence by the country’s national lottery regulator the Glücksspielkollegium.

The DSL becomes the first private lottery to be awarded a licence in more than a decade and plans to launch its offering in September.

It was founded by entrepreneur Gerald Wagener and Olympic discus gold medallist Robert Harting. The state lottery of Hessen (LOTTO Hessen) is a founding shareholder and currently the only lottery operator involved in the project.
