The introduction of a new 35 per cent tax on all gambling in Kenya has seen local operator SportPesa bring an end to all of its sponsorship activities in the country.

The operator's withdrawal from its sponsorship agreements is set to cause a funding crisis for the country's professional sports teams, which depend heavily on SportPesa's funding.

Taxes on gambling activity, which ranged from between 5 and 15 per cent of gross gaming revenue, were increased to 35 per cent by Kenya's ruling National Alliance party (TNA) and came into effect on January 1st of this year.
