The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has named Jim Ananich as its new chairman, subject to approval by the Michigan Senate.

Anarich will serve as chair of the MGCB until the end of 2028 and succeeds Linda Forte, who has completed her term.

Anarich is the president and CEO of the Greater Flint Health Coalition and a lecturer at the University of Michigan, with the appointment marking his first role in the gaming industry.

Anarich will serve on the board alongside members Joni M. Thrower Davis, Mark Evenson, Deidre A. Lambert-Bounds, and Andrew T. Palms.

“Jim Ananich is a proven leader with a long-standing commitment to public service and the people of Michigan,” said MGCB executive director Henry Williams. “His legislative experience, strategic insight, and collaborative approach make him exceptionally well-suited to lead the Board as we continue our mission to ensure the integrity of gaming in Michigan.”

Anarich’s appointment comes as the regulator continues its crackdown on unlicensed operators in the state.

The MGCB issued cease-and-desist orders to Panama-based operators SportsBetting.ag and BetOnline.ag last week for offering illegal gambling in the state.

Following an anonymous tip on the sites and following an investigation, the regulator found that Sportsbetting.ag was accepting wagering on sports, horse races, politics, table games, card games, and virtual casino games. The site also offered cash-back incentives for casino losses.

BetOnline.ag was found to be offering sports betting, live event betting, casino games, horse racing, esports and various contest tournaments, with players able to wager with cryptocurrency.

Williams commented: “The Michigan Gaming Control Board is committed to enforcing Michigan’s gaming laws and protecting consumers from illegal gambling. We encourage residents to only engage with licensed and regulated online platforms for a safe and fair gaming experience.”
