The Australian government has demanded that the country’s broadcasters implement measure to reduce the promotion and advertising of gambling during sport, and has threatened to fast-track new legislation to do so if the Australian Communications and Media Authority does not revise its code promptly.

In a statement released Sunday, Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, said that all promotions of odds by gambling companies and commentators will be banned during the broadcast of live sports matches, under new rules.

“The public have had enough of odds and betting promotions being shoved down their throats while listening to and watching sport,” said Senator Conroy, Minister assisting the Prime Minister on Digital Productivity.
